WHITTIER With their hair slicked down and sporting new clothes and backpacks, more than 50,000 Whittier-area students headed back to classes as the new school year began Wednesday at six local school districts. Proud and nervous parents, armed with cameras, waved goodbye to their children at Sorensen Elementary School in Whittier, which is among several Whittier City School District campuses facing declining enrollment.
