first_imgEDMONTON, Alberta (CMC): Reigning champion Rico Walcott and Jamaican Shamaree Muir both landed doubles as Caribbean jockeys once again dominated Wednesday’s mid-week programme at Northlands Park here. Walcott, the six-time champion, scored in race three with 2-1 chance Western Heritage and in race five with favourite Hero’s Ginger Snap, while Muir produced winners in race two with odds-on bet Mislemonattraction and in race seven with another favourite Sir Bronx. Trinidadian Keishan Balgobin was also in winner’s row, capturing race three over 31/2 furlongs with 5-1 bet Big River while Barbadian Kyle Carter also tasted victory, making all the running with 16-1 long-shot Pacioretty to take race four over 61/2 furlongs. Veteran multiple-time former champion, Quincy Welch, continued to display his quality by winning race six over 61/2 furlongs with favourite Justgettingeven. Barbadian Walcott continues to lead the standings with 57 wins with Balgobin in second on 25 and Rigo Sarmiento third with 22. Jamaican Dane Nelson, in fourth, and Muir, fifth, both have 20 wins. Walcott continued to separate himself from the colony with another excellent outing as he marched towards an unprecedented seventh title at the western Canada racetrack. The 28-year-old opened his account when he stalked from second with six-year-old bay gelding Western Heritage before overhauling Time Flight in the stretch to win the six-furlong contest by half-length over the three-year-old and upwards winless this year. His second win came in another six-furlong trip when he produced a gate-to-wire effort aboard four-year-old chestnut filly Hero’s Ginger Snap to turn back the three-year-old and upward maiden fillies and mares by 41/2 lengths. Muir, meanwhile, opened his account in a six-furlong trip, making all the running with Mislemon attraction to beat the three-year-old fillies by 21/2 furlongs. He then paired with the four-year-old gelding Sir Bronx to trounce the three-year-old and upwards by 21/2 lengths, going 61/2 furlongs. SECOND WINlast_img read more
