Anthony Hylton, says the Government is working to improve the country’s global competitiveness, by addressing significant hindrances to doing business and securing investments in the country. He said that through the National Competitiveness Council (NCC), the Ministry will target areas in the business environment that are critical to improving the country’s global competitiveness rankings. The Minister was addressing members of the diplomatic corps during a forum held at the Courtleigh Hotel, New Kingston on February 1 as part of activities for Diplomatic Week 2012. Established in 2010, the NCC brings the systems pertaining to national competitiveness under one umbrella. It seeks to implement cross-functional and multi-agency strategies to address the impediments associated with establishing and operating a business in Jamaica, and drive the creation and maintenance of a policy environment that facilitates continued improvements in the productivity and innovativeness of Jamaican micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Minister Hylton said that even though Jamaica has lost ground in its business and economic competitiveness as evidenced by the recent rankings by global business and economic reports, theGovernment is committed to tackling major impediments to doing business and attracting investments in Jamaica. “We (the Government) take the results of the Global Competitiveness Report 2011-2012and the Doing Business Reportvery seriously.  These reports are quite instructive. They highlight critical areas of the economic and business environment that we ignore to our peril,” he said. He said that “through these reports, my attention was drawn to some of the areas that should be considered priority and the challenges that must be embraced in order to strengthen competitiveness and foster an environment that supports business investments.” Minister Hylton said that in order to develop a globally competitive platform for business and industry in the country, the Government will establish policies and programmes that are critical to fostering an environment that will stimulate industrial and commercial development. “The MIIC is formulating realistic policies and undertaking innovative programmes that enable investors to take advantage of business opportunities.  These opportunities, in turn, are designed to drive the development of the country’s industrial and commercial sectors,” he said. The Minister said these policies are aimed at creating an environment that enhances the global competitiveness of domestic-based companies by addressing specific areas of weaknesses in the economy, adding that the Government is focused on addressing the challenges of starting, operating and sustaining new ventures. “We will create the environment that is necessary for investments to occur, and are important for business vehicles to operate successfully.  Essentially, the strategic focus of the Ministry will be on restructuring and rationalising its operations to deliver the solutions that businesses seek,” he stated. Approximately 63 resident and non-resident Ambassadors and High Commissioners and Charge d’affaires are participating in the 14th annual Diplomatic Week which runs from Sunday, January 29 to Friday, February 3. first_imgDuke Williams, here with Sammie Coates (18) has been dismissed from the Auburn football team.Duke Williams, here with Sammie Coates (18) has been dismissed from the Auburn football team.As crazy as this sounds, Duke Williams and Auburn are better off without each other.Williams wasn’t playing with the same fire and energy that electrified Auburn’s offense last season. He didn’t give off the same spirited vibe that made him so entertaining to watch.Auburn was clearly having issues with him on and off the field. Auburnsports.com has reported that Williams was involved in “an off-the-field incident at a local nightclub” this past weekend. That appears to have been the final straw for Auburn, but the football program and Williams were no longer on the same page and when arguably your best player becomes a distraction, it’s time to part ways.“When individuals fail to meet the expectations of our program, there has to be consequences,” said Auburn coach Gus Malzahn in a statement. “I gave D’haquille the chance to prove himself. I am disappointed that it did not work out.”I said before the first game that Duke Williams wouldn’t make it the whole season. He doesn’t think rules apply to him.— David Mobley (@DavidMobley_) October 6, 2015//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsThere is always more behind a statement. Way more. Williams will have his say to explain his side about his time at Auburn, but for now, I can only shake my head at a situation that went from bad to worse when it appeared so promising just a year ago.Williams had a chance to write the following story: Kid overcomes a rough life to reach super stardom. Now he’ll have to continue that journey elsewhere and has made the road far more difficult to [email protected]@FootballAU What’s the other side of story on releasing Duke Williams?!?! It gotta be another side! #auburn#auburntigers— B.Day (@MrConsistent21) October 6, 2015//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsYou’d think Williams had everything to play for this season. Top 10 draft pick. Huge contract. Dream to play in the NFL. National championship. SEC championship.Instead, he didn’t play like an All-American and future high-first round pick should. Williams caught just 12 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown in five games this season. To put that in perspective, Williams caught nine passes for 154 yards and a touchdown in his Auburn debut last season against Arkansas. At this moment, this doesn’t looked good for him, but Williams will get a shot to play at the next level and can now put all his energies into preparing for the NFL combine. This isn’t the ideal way to go about it. He’ll miss the structure of playing for a team, but based on how things were going at Auburn, he wasn’t responding well to it, either. So maybe he’s better off doing his own thing realizing if he fails, it’s all on him, not anyone else. His draft stock has taken a ginormous hit, but he’ll wind up in someone’s NFL camp. Trust and believe that.Has someone ever killed their draft stock without getting arrested as quickly as Duke Williams— Jordan Ney (@jsney20) October 6, 2015//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsI’m sure his influence in the locker room was significant at Auburn because he has an engaging personality. I keep going back to the YouTube video of him motivating his teammates at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College before a game.Williams had the locker room buzzing with his pep talk.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB_vk2RQ29k&w=420&h=315%5DNow take that same guy with the wrong attitude. That can create division in the locker room. Not saying he caused that, but Williams was a leader on that team. If he wasn’t motivated or driven, that can rub off on younger players. I noticed him after the overtime win over Jacksonville State laughing and joking as if Auburn had won by three touchdowns. Didn’t look good at all. When you really think about it, Williams didn’t come to Auburn to play two years. He wanted to make his first year at Auburn his last and move forward to the NFL.Then he got hurt. Williams injured his knee against Texas A&MThen he got in trouble. Williams got suspended for the Outback Bowl. Then he started tweeting about transferring in the spring.Duke Williams being dismissed is a huge step as far as discipline..Got mad respect for him and wish him the best!!— Coach Jay (@Jerrious2) October 6, 2015//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsWilliams wanted to be in the NFL, not college. I can only speculate this because Auburn never made him available to the media this season. What I do know is Williams missed six practices for what Malzahn categorized as a disciplinary issue. He clearly wasn’t following rules, but Auburn brought him back and he started in the season opener against Louisville. However, Malzahn put Williams on a zero tolerance policy, something I’m not a fan of. If you have to take that course of action to keep a player in line, that player, to me, is too far gone to reel back in.Auburn isn’t without fault on this. Malzahn didn’t appear to do enough to get him the ball. Williams had his share of drops, which shouldn’t be the case for someone of his talent, but there were times he was open and didn’t get the ball. He got tattooed a couple of times going over the middle as well.lol duke williams is gone like it makes a difference when there’s no one to throw to him anyway— have a good tim (@turbojunker) October 6, 2015//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsThe Tigers have changed starting quarterbacks from Jeremy Johnson to Sean White and haven’t committed to White moving forward as Auburn is on a bye week before playing next Thursday night at Kentucky. The offense has become one dimensional. Now it probably wouldn’t be if the quarterback play was better, but Williams hasn’t done his part either to help the offense.Last week, I asked Malzahn what was going with him and specifically questioned if Williams was engaged. Malzahn indicated the latter wasn’t a problem. He said Williams was facing double coverage early in the Mississippi State game, but said he had figure out a way to get him the ball.“There’s nothing that Duke’s doing wrong or he needs to do better,” Malzahn said.A week later, Williams is no longer at Auburn. As crazy as this sounds, it’s for the best for both.Auburn’s football ticket woes raise major questionslast_img read more

first_imgFormer NBA player Allen Iverson, left, shows his jersey as he poses with entertainer Ice Cube after they announced the launch of the BIG3, a new 3-on-3 professional basketball league, in New York, Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017. (AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews)NEW YORK (AP) — Ice Cube has dreamed about seeing his favorite NBA players come out of retirement. Now, he’s going to make it happen. The rapper turned entertainment mogul is starting a 3-on-3 league for former professional basketball players. And one of his favorites, Allen Iverson, has signed on as a player/coach in Big3. The two were at a news conference Wednesday to introduce the new league.“As a fan I’m excited to see the guys I know who can still strap it up and play at a competitive, high level,” Ice Cube said. “I’m happy that I have the right people and partners to provide the stage for that.”Ice Cube partnered with entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz to start the league for former professional players over the age of 30. It is expected to start play on June 24 with Chauncey Billups, Rashard Lewis and Kenyon Martin among the former NBA stars already committed to the league. Gary Payton and George Gervin will serve as two of the coaches in the league.“We grew up watching these guys, some of them from high school, college through the pros. We see their ups and downs, win games and lose games, become part of our everyday life in a lot of ways,” Ice Cube said. “We look up one day and they’re gone, nowhere to be seen. It’s like losing a family friend or loved one or best friend. Someone you just really admire. I got my heroes, too.”Count Iverson among them.“Getting him to sign on was big,” Ice Cube said. “He still can play.”Iverson, who was enshrined in the Naismith Hall of Fame last year, was excited to be part of the new league.“When I got the call it was a no-brainer. It’s Ice Cube. You don’t turn that down,” Iverson said. “That’s success looking right into your eyes. I wanted to be a part of it.”Asked who he would most love to have on his team, the former MVP had an easy answer.“Shaq and Kobe, that’s a no-brainer,” Iverson said. The league will play its eight-game season on Saturdays in the summer — so far without Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. Each week’s contests will take place in a different city, with all eight teams playing. It will culminate in a two-week playoffs. The players will share revenues with teams earning more money based on how they finish in the standings.Teams will be comprised of five players and games will be played to 60 points. The league will also have a 4-point shot — a little deeper than the NBA 3-point line. There will be a draft combine in March with a draft set to take place soon after. To be eligible to play in the league you have to have played professionally — in the NBA, D-League or overseas.“I know a lot of my friends are going to hit me up on text to have me draft them,” Lewis said. “But it’s really a business, I have to act as a general manager as well and find the best four other guys for my team to do well.”Kwatinetz said that they are looking into potential sponsorships and television deals, and the cities haven’t been set.Ice Cube and Kwatinetz are hoping each weekend’s games will have the festive atmosphere of a Final Four or NBA All-Star Game, with other events that include kid clinics and halftime shows.Ice Cube laughed when asked whether he’d be performing.“I don’t know. Maybe if I’m feeling it. I don’t want this league to be about me. I’ll do everything I can to promote the league and get it rolling and then I want to fade to the back,” Ice Cube said. “Let these guys do what they do best. You know I might get down, you never know. I’m definitely not above it. I like to get down on stuff like this.”___Follow Doug on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/dougfeinberglast_img read more
