first_imgby Amber Schmitz, Sumner Newscow — The annual fundraising event for Bowl for Kids Sake will be held Saturday, April 7 with session at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Meadow Lanes in Wellington. The money will go toward the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization by providing mentorship to children who may face adverse situations. It doesn’t take much to make a difference in a child’s life. Through BBBS people can build strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better.Currently, there are 51 youth in Sumner County who have requested a one-to-one mentoring relationship. Since 2000, BBBS has been serving youth in Sumner County. Youth ranging from ages 5-17, along with their parents and/or guardians must both wish to participate in the program. Parents and guardians of the participating youth must complete an application for the school based program. Those wishing to match with a volunteer outside of the school must go through an intake process including orientation, personal safety training, and an interview.Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have graduated from high school, or earned a GED. All volunteers must commit to one year of service, complete an application, background checks, an information session and interview. They must have a vehicle, valid insurance and driver’s license to participate outside of school. There are also couple and family matches which allow either spouse to participate individually and be matched with either a boy or girl.Their annual fundraising and recruitment campaign, Bowl for Kids Sake, raises funds for Sumner County events that serve the county’s youth. Businesses can help by providing sponsorships, organizing teams, and providing prizes for participants. Groups of youth or adults can form a team of six, with a goal of raising $960, to support a match for one year. Participants receive two games of bowling, pizza, drinks, and the opportunity to win door prizes. Individuals who raise $160 will be awarded with a t-shirt.Wellington’s event will be held Saturday, April 7, with sessions at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Another event will be held in Derby on April 28 from 1 to 3 p.m.Grab some friends or family, form a bowling team, and help out the youth of Sumner County!Follow us on Facebook.Follow us on Twitter.
