first_imgSOCCER PNG Football Association, New Guinea Islands representative, Maha Waname has given his backing for the Arawa Football Association to host this year’s NGI leg of the Besta Cup challenge. Waname issued his support by calling on all New Guinea Islands PNGFA affiliates to start preparing for the games which will be held in Arawa, Central Bougainville. “The Arawa Football Association was endorsed during last year’s NGI games in Kimbe and I am now calling on all affiliated associations to prepare to field teams in this year’s games to be hosted in Arawa,” Waname who is also the president of the Kimbe Soccer Association, said. The Arawa Football Association is working in close collaboration with the Bougainville Soccer Federation to come up with a host organising committee to ensure preparations are on track to successfully deliver this major regional event on the soccer calendar. Arawa Football Association patron and former president Augustine Barkson said it was historical for the people of Arawa to host such a regional tournament, especially after the end of the Bougainville Crisis. He said it would not be an easy task to host such an event. He was looking forward to the support and cooperation of all stakeholders, especially sponsors to ensure the successful hosting of the tournament. Barkson, who is also the chairman of the Arawa Urban Community Government, outlined that the tournament would boost the local economy, especially in the town benefitting both the formal and informal sectors. He added that the event would also give an opportunity for the people of Bougainville to witness the level of soccer being played by other centres as well as give an opportunity to for youths to mingle with each other and create unity among Bougainvilleans especially in the lead up to referendum. Bougainville Soccer Federation president, Justin Helele said this was the perfect opportunity for Arawa and other affiliated associations in Bougainville to “taste the NGI level of football.” The winner of this year’s NGI Besta Cup Tournament will represent the NGI at finals in Lae later this year.last_img read more
